This is an older poem, originally written for a college poetry class. During a workshop discussion, my teacher matter-of-factly described this poem’s subtext. I must have looked surprised, because what she said next was: “Whether or not you put it there, it’s there.” I return often to this lesson about poetry and control, about the poem as a place where awareness can emerge.
